At home vegetable gardening is a trend Rockscape has seen emerging for the past several seasons, but 2016 seems to be the year of the vegetable garden- herbs and veggies seem to be on the top of everybody’s want list.
With the promise of an abundance of your own organically grown harvest- its been showcased to look extremely easy. But like any landscape it doesn’t come without work and maintenance:
If you’re not deterred, and would love garden of your own- Let Rockscape help! We start with a clean slate, raised beds are perfect for vegetables and herbs. Set dimensions make it easy to amend soil, easy to calculate number of plants, easy to weed and water, and easy to harvest.
The growing season in Muskoka is relatively short, we start with young plants as opposed to seeds. They give us immediate satisfaction and provide a jump start to the growing season- which usually begins the end of May. Herbs and vegetables grow fast! Within weeks, providing proper water and maintenance you’ll see plants easily double and triple in size.
Harvest times will vary depending on area, time planted, sun and light conditions, and even weather. Some failures are inevitable- you’ll quickly find out what works and what won’t. We have a client that longs to grow garlic, in theory it’s easy to grow, but conditions just aren’t ideal- a little too dry, and not quite enough sun. We can however, successfully grow zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers on that property- your successes will make it totally worth while!
If you’re not looking to invest the time or effort required for vegetable gardening, try growing some herbs and small vegetables in containers- they require nothing more than a sunny location and consistent water. Place them close to the kitchen so they’re easily accessible and you remember to use them!
Have we convinced you to try a vegetable garden of your own? Or have you already? Let us know. If we had to guess, we at Rockscape think this latest trend will be around for a while.
